    Pairwise believes healthy food should be affordable, convenient, and sustainable.  We believe gene editing can be used to accelerate plant breeding in leveraging the natural genetic diversity in agricultural crops to address global food challenges.  We are bringing the benefits of these new innovations both to producers and directly to consumers through the produce aisle of their local grocery store.  Located in the Raleigh-Durham metro area, Pairwise was formed in 2017 and has plans to add about 100 employees over the next year to help meet our aggressive product development goals. 

    The protein scientist will be responsible for developing innovations related to the mechanisms of gene editing and novel optimizations around CRISPR enzyme targeting and activity in plants.  This scientist will contribute within a team of PhD scientists that will develop novel IP to improve the gene editing technologies and applications at Pairwise.  Your contribution will be critical to helping Pairwise meet technology and product development goals, and to building a culture where science is fun.



    • PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related field with preference given to candidates with gene editing experience
    • Strong experience in protein engineering and optimization
    • Track record of excellence in formulating and executing research leading to novel or improved protein characteristics
    • Demonstrated ability to contribute collaboratively in a cross functional environment



    • Collaborate closely with molecular and cell biology scientists to drive an innovation culture and create a world-class research focus on gene editing in plants
    • Create, evaluate, and optimize new gene editing proteins to generate IP and increase the efficacy of the gene editing program
    • Generate foundational data on the efficacy of various gene editing proteins in vitro and in eukaryotic cells
    • Identify new strategies for the application of gene editing tools to improve agronomic and consumer characteristics of plants
    • Contribute to the effective operation of a protein production platform to support requirements of various technology and product development goals
    • Train and mentor research associates in technical excellence
    • Bring external innovation into Pairwise
